In the Beginning was the Kingdom – an exhibition marking 1100 years of the Croatian Kingdom
Klovićevi dvori Gallery, October 16th 2025 – March 15th 2026 (the exhibition was extended due to the great interest of the audience and numerous announced groups of visitors).
In the last week of the exhibition, we would like to once again invite everyone who did not have a chance yet, to visit the exhibition “In the Beginning Was the Kingdom” which closes on March 15, 2026. Given the significance of the exhibition on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom, we would like to reflect on the attendance of the exhibition as well as the response among the Croatian audience.
The exhibition was seen by over 55.000 visitors from all over Croatia. It was a special honor for us to host more than 750 elementary and secondary schools, around 1000 children from Zagreb kindergartens and preschool children in general. We also hosted numerous associations, hospital departments, visitors from related and other public state and city institutions in organized tours.

Every Thursday, expert lectures were held by associated who worked on the exhibition and presented various interesting topics such as valuables from the Treasury of the Zagreb Cathedral, the Višeslav Baptistery, valuable books of the University Library, historicistic painting, and others. Countless expert tours were held in which not only authors and curators participated, but also historians and experts, as well as students who recieved numerous compliments from visitors.
The exhibition was opened by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, and was also visited by the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, as well as numerous ministries, representatives of the diplomatic corps, churches and dioceses, church orders, the rectors’ council, the Society of Brethren of the Croatian Dragon, and colleagues from museums and galleries from all over the country.
Bringing together the most significant monuments of Croatia’s past, from antiquity to modern times, the exhibition offered an interesting journey through the rich past of the origins, development and demise of the Croatian Kingdom. After the exhibition, all those who wish will be able to consult the same content via the large exhibition catalogue in Croatian and English, as well as a virtual walk through the entire exhibition.

Believing that generations a hundred years from now will approach the exploration of their own past with equal passion, we hope that this exhibition will serve as an inspiration and a valuable reference for them.
We wish to thank everyone for the wonderful comments in the book of impressions, as well as for the remarks that we will try to correct in the future.
We would like to thank the authors, co-authors, all associates, co-organizers and lending institutions, sponsors and media patrons, as well as the Government of the Republic of Croatia for its patronage, the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia for its support, and in the end, of course – all our loyal visitors.
