The exhibition “Atelijeri Žitnjak – From Periphery to Centre” is the second in a series of exhibitions by Klovićevi dvori Gallery about Zagreb’s artistic studios: these are spaces of creativity where some of the best works of Croatian art have been created since the second half of the 20th century to the present day. The exhibition will be held on the first floor of the Klovićevi Dvori Gallery from 5 December 2024 to 16 February 2025.
The first exhibition in the series, titled “The Studios in Medulićeva / Remembering Forgotten Times”, opened in April 2023 and focused on the work of artists associated with the studio spaces in Medulićeva Street 12. It featured 185 works by sixteen artists, created between 1969 and 2023.
The new exhibition is dedicated to the artists associated with Atelijeri Žitnjak. The art organization Atelijeri Žitnjak was founded in 2004 by artists to whom the City of Zagreb had allocated studio spaces within the old primary school building in Žitnjak. The AŽ Gallery was established in 2005 as a multifunctional exhibition space, hosting hundreds of exhibitions, performances, lectures, discussions, and other cultural events. The initial focus of those involved with Žitnjak was the revitalisation of urban peripheries and industrial zones, aiming for their cultural and social affirmation.
Through this exhibition, part of the series on Zagreb’s studios, we wish to highlight the role of artists who transformed the raw space into a place of creativity and socialising, as well as those who continue to breathe new life into this space today, producing outstanding works in sculpture, painting, printmaking, and other forms of art.
We selected pieces from the oeuvre of 21 artists: Marko Ambroš, Antonija Balić, Neven Bilić, Boris Cvjetanović, Hamo Čavrk, Boris Greiner, Dražen Grubišić, Alem Korkut, Dora Kovačević, Vladimir Meglić, Kata Mijatović, Hrvoje Mitrov, Zoran Pavelić, Predrag Pavić, Vesna Pokas, Frane Rogić, Hrvoje Šercar, Nikola Šimunić, Mirjana Vodopija, Fedor Vučemilović, and Vlasta Žanić.
Their art highlights the value of collective action, shared vision of exhibition spaces, and the lasting enthusiasm and artistic vigour.
