Exhibition MARA BRATOŠ / PHOTOGRAPHS [October 10th – November 17th 2024]

After numerous monographic exhibitions this author created in the past three decades, this exhibition will be a cross-section of her oeuvre. Focused on the shaping of emotionally important motifs for the author, whether it is an introspection, a questioning of one’s physicality, or relationships with people and places, her oeuvre will be characterized by work in cycles and series of photographs.

Hidden places, Dubrovnik, 1994

Her photographic expressions acquire their meanings through emphasized procedurality and temporality in her portraits, figures of ‘auto acts’, and places in nature or social events. Carefully directing the recorded scenes and documenting in a broader sense the natural and social aspects of reality, nature, and society, everyday life, cultural events, and their protagonists, she creates intertextual photographic sequences of visual-textual representations as references whose meaning depend on the context to which they refer. Ambiances of the lived time, the city and people, Dubrovnik, Lopud, Zagreb, friends, and close intimate scenes, regardless of whether the author is present or invisible – all these images were first of all triggered by an internal affective impulse, the power of introspection and choosing the moment that will become a frame in a series of similar, analogous, photographic images, establishing layering of meaning and interpretive openness.

Leona Paraminski, In a room, 2003

From the early 90s to the latest works, created in 2024, the exhibition will try to highlight the importance of her oeuvre for the Croatian photography, especially women’s photography. The structure and meaning of that work reflect the evolution of the consciousness of the author who built her work from the photographic image as a representation and its deconstruction – to the medium of the photographic image as a performative act.
