Painters don’t always create art with just a brush. Sometimes they apply paint with twigs, sponges, fabric, hands or completely unexpected objects to explore the trace, texture and surface of the painting. In the exhibition, we will observe the works of artists such as Fedor Fischer and Predrag Todorović who experiment with materials, layers and different ways of applying paint. Their paintings often seem to have been created spontaneously, through play and exploration, and that is exactly what we will try to do ourselves.
TASK: After a guided tour of the exhibition with an educational booklet, where we will observe how artists build the surface of a painting, what traces different materials have and how texture can become an important part of an artwork, in the workshop we will create our own painting without using a classic brush. Instead, we will use various objects and materials: sponges, twigs, foil, forks, nets, leaves, rope, toy cars, sand and other unexpected tools. Each participant will have to use at least five different textures or tools and explore what traces they leave on paper. Think about it: can an object we use every day become a painting tool? What trace does it leave? What atmosphere or feeling does it create?

Collage is an artistic technique in which an image is created by combining different materials: paper, photographs, newspapers, textiles, packaging or other found fragments. Artists combine colors, textures and cut-out parts to create a completely new ensemble and a new meaning. After a guided tour through the exhibition with an educational booklet, where we will observe the works of artists from the Biennial of Painting and explore how motifs, details and ideas can be reinterpreted through collage and we will make our own collages in a workshop. Artists sometimes use collage to connect reality and imagination, everyday objects and art, past and present. A cut-out fragment can change meaning when placed in a new context.
TASK: At the exhibition, we will observe the colors, shapes, motifs and details in the artists’ paintings and think about how we can reinterpret them in our own work. In the workshop, we will create collages by combining cut-out photos, papers, textures and drawings. Participants will try to convey the atmosphere or motif of a work from the exhibition, but in their own way – by combining different fragments into a new story or a new image. Think: what happens when we combine a part of one painting with something completely different? Can a collage become a new reality?
