VASKO LIPOVAC – A RETROSPECTIVE
14 September 14 2017 – 25 February 2018.
The retrospective exhibition of Vasko Lipovac is a unique event with which this artist will be presented as a distinctive figure of Croatian and European modernism of the second half of the 20th century. Lipovac – who was born in Boka Kotorska, and spent his life and creative lifetime in Split – weaved the spirit of the Mediterranean into his work as key substance.
An abundance of cheerfulness and occasionally humour, irony, but also beauty, make this art both seductive and witty. Simultaneously, through his clear plastic idiom, we recognise numerous subjects that marked the art of the last century. The oeuvre – which branches out through abstract and figurative sections, and different media of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, urban interventions and constructions, thereby mediating references along the lines of experience of the greats of global and European modernity such as Calder, Miró, or the “new realists” of France, will be uncovered as a specific unity of the artist and his contemplative and sensual world, the origin of which radiates with the idealism of the cultural tradition of the Mediterranean.
Apart from an authorial overview of all of the artist’s cycles, this exhibition will also present to the public the artist’s numerous, hitherto not exhibited works.
